It is with regret and profound sadness that the TY Danjuma Foundation announces the death of one of its founding trustees – Prof. Jean Herskovits Corry who passed on February 5, 2019 in New York, USA. Prof. Jean Herskovits Corry served on the Programmes Committee of the Board since its inception in 2009, where she provided strategic oversight on the implementation of education projects.

Prof. Jean Herskovits Corry brought a wealth of experience to the Foundation. She held a D. Phil. In African History from Oxford University and was a research Professor of History at the State University of New York at Purchase. She also taught at Brown University, Swarthmore College, City College of the City University of New York and Columbia University.

Recognized for her decades of experience in Nigeria, Prof. Jean Herskovits Corry wrote extensively and consulted for foundations, corporations and the World Bank on Nigerian and African matters and testified at U.S. Senate and Congressional Committee Hearings on Nigeria and U.S. Africa policy. She held various positions in Nigeria, including Director of United Bank for Africa (1998-2005), where she also chaired the Board of Trustees of the UBA Foundation. She had previously served as head of the Nigeria Reinvestment Project of Citizens Energy Corporation and from 2001-2008 was a member of Conoco Phillips’ Nigeria Advisory Council. Jean’s love for Nigeria became an addiction as she visited every state of the country by the end of her life. Jean was a unique and true friend of Nigeria.

Prof. Jean Herskovits Corry will be deeply missed by fellow trustees and staff of the Foundation. Our hearts and deepest condolences go to her partner Mr. John Corry and family members. May God grant them the fortitude to bear her loss.
