On September 9, 2026, the TY Danjuma Foundation successfully concluded a targeted health intervention in Murbai, Ardo Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State. The intervention provided critical eye care to 36 community members suffering from preventable blindness and severe eye conditions.
The Foundation was first alerted to the emerging health crisis through the MarBen Foundation indicating a prevalence of visual impairment and blindness among residents in August. In line with its core value of responsive grantmaking, the Foundation commissioned an investigation through a partner organisation to assess the situation. The report, conducted by Benbrian Support Mission (BSM) in collaboration with A&T Eye Centre, confirmed that a significant portion of the population was afflicted with one or more preventable eye conditions requiring immediate medical treatment.
The two-day community eye screening conducted on 18 – 19 August 2026 yielded this.
The outreach documented 34 children and 41 adults requiring immediate intervention. And of key concern was the identification of potentially sight-threatening conditions among children aged 3–15 years, including glaucoma, cataract, early lens opacity, and low vision associated with squint.
Following the findings, the Foundation mobilised resources to facilitate comprehensive treatment for 36 identified cases at the Daisy Danjuma Eye Hospital in Takum, Taraba State. The Foundation covered all associated costs, including transportation of patients from Murbai to Takum, full medical treatment, accommodation and feeding throughout their stay at the facility.
While the immediate health needs of the patients are being addressed, The Foundation remains open to engagement with government, health authorities, development partners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to identify and tackle the challenges that contributed to this emergency.
