The TY Danjuma Foundation, in partnership with the Care Vision Support Initiative (CAVSI), hosted a transformative eye camp at the Daisy Danjuma Eye Hospital in Takum, Taraba State. The initiative aimed to reduce preventable blindness through free screenings, treatments, and surgeries for underserved communities.

With millions worldwide suffering from vision impairment, preventable blindness remains a major public health challenge, and the eye camp has been a rewarding strategy the Foundation uses to reduce the scourge of blindness among underserved populations in Nigeria.

The eye camp provided comprehensive eye care services, including visual acuity tests, consultations, medication, and cataract referrals for advanced care. A skilled medical team fully participated and performed over 100 cataract surgeries during the intervention, while a school eye screening outreach identified students and teachers in need of urgent treatment. Over 1,165 beneficiaries received critical care, with many expressing gratitude for the life-changing intervention.

Kindness Joseph, a 13-year-old boy, had glaucoma that caused blindness in one eye—without him even realising it. Over time, his vision faded, and he was at risk of losing sight in his other eye too. Thankfully, doctors performed a free trabeculotomy to save his remaining vision. He was deeply grateful, knowing that his sister, who he lives with, is still in secondary school and would not have been able to afford the procedure.

The intervention underscores the importance of collaborative healthcare initiatives in addressing preventable blindness. By combining medical expertise, community engagement, and structured follow-up, the TY Danjuma Foundation and CAVSI are consolidating efforts on years of partnership for scalable, impactful eye care interventions in Nigeria’s hard-to-reach regions.
