In our maternal and child health interventions, the Foundation strives to make tremendous impact in rural communities across Nigeria.
One of the ways to ensure intervention impact is to keep a close watch on the implementation. Hence, a team of staffs embarked on a monitoring visit to a health intervention implemented by St. Monica Maternity, Yakoko, Zing Local Government, Taraba State. Sister Lucy Tanko coordinates the Foundation’s maternal and child health intervention being implemented by St. Monica’s Maternity in ten communities of Zing and the neighboring Yorro Local Government.
The project seeks to improve maternal and child welfare through; teenage pregnancy awareness and family planning training, provision of scanning services for pregnant women, establishing a drug revolving scheme, and providing portable water (borehole) at Mika Layinkoro.
During the visit, a number of results and challenges were brought to the fore. For results; 47 scans were done for pregnant women and there was an increased uptake of antenatal and blood pressure services in Yakoko.

The Team also visited Mika Layinkoro, an outstation under St. Monica, were a health center was rehabilitated by the Foundation. Members of the community applauded the Foundation’s intervention, stating that three births were recorded since the rehabilitation of the health center, also access to drugs was made easy with drugs supplied by St. Monica. This has saved members of the community from travelling long distances to get drugs.
The intervention at the host communities has improved the maternal health of pregnant women with zero mortality recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2019.
