The TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF), in collaboration with Pro-Health International (PHI), concluded a week-long comprehensive medical outreach in Lagos State, targeting residents of the Makoko community.

A Patient Undergoing Surgery
Makoko, regarded as one of Africa’s largest floating slums, is a densely populated, water-logged community built partly on stilts over the Lagos lagoon. Residents face persistent public health challenges, including poor sanitation, blocked drainage, unsafe housing, open fish smoking, and limited access to healthcare.

A View of Makoko Community, Lagos
In line with the Foundation’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, especially underserved populations, the second consecutive intervention in Makoko offered a wide range of free medical and surgical services. These included general and specialist consultations, surgeries, laboratory tests, health education, provision of Mama Kits and nutrition supplements, and preventive care. More complex and sensitive cases were referred to and treated at the Soteria Maternity Hospital, the secondary location of the medical outreach.

A Breakdown of Intervention Outcome
A total of 1,049 health interventions were delivered to 610 beneficiaries, addressing common illnesses such as malaria, typhoid, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal conditions.
The success of the intervention hinged on the collaborative efforts of stakeholders, community leaders, Soteria Hospital, and local volunteers who added diverse value to the intervention.
Together, we remain committed to reaching Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations with quality, lifesaving healthcare.
