In March 2025, the TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF), in partnership with the Social Welfare Network Initiative (SWNI), distributed food to displaced persons at the Wassa IDP resettlement in the Federal Capital Territory as an intervention aimed at improving food security and addressing child malnutrition.

Food Distribution at Wassa IDP Camp

With rising food prices and limited access to income opportunities, displaced families have struggled to feed themselves daily, worsening the situation for the children and increasing the chance of child malnutrition. The Foundation’s intervention distributed essential food items such as maize, beans, soya plus, sorghum, and vegetable oil to over 2000 persons, ensuring access to food for vulnerable households.

In addition, the intervention trained pregnant women and female-headed households with under-five children on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (MIYCF-E). The training conducted in collaboration with the FCT Primary Health Care Development Board (PHCDB) equipped participants with knowledge and skills to make nutrient-rich meals from available local resources for children. A screening for malnutrition in under-five children was conducted, after which general administration of Vitamin A and albendazole for the under-five children was done. Identified malnourished children were subsequently provided with Wonder cereal and micronutrient supplements.

The Foundation and its partners’ efforts to enhance food security were supported by the IDP settlement leadership, which led to the smooth implementation of the intervention.
