In a major step to improve access to quality education in Nigeria, the TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF) has commissioned the TY Danjuma Academy, a multi-grade, ultra-modern school, in Takum, Taraba State. Officially unveiled by His Royal Majesty, Barrister Sopiya Ahmadu, Gboshi III, the Chief of Takum, this comprehensive educational complex represents a significant investment in providing world-class education to Nigerians at the grassroots level.

Designed to create a comprehensive learning environment, the academy offers modern amenities, including computer laboratories, an indoor gymnasium, a football pitch, a playground, and a cafeteria, which facilitate dynamic and multi-grade teaching. With 40 dedicated staff, all trained in Child Protection Policy and Family Teaching Model of discipline, the Academy ensures a safe and supportive environment where pupils thrive. The Academy is committed to holistic education, the physical and spiritual growth of students, and nurturing compassionate leaders.

During the commissioning ceremony, Lt. Gen. TY Danjuma (Rtd.), the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the TY Danjuma Foundation, emphasised the Foundation’s long-term commitment to national development. “Education is the bedrock of any prosperous society. With this school, we are not just building classrooms; we are investing in the future leaders of Takum, Taraba, and Nigeria. We hope that this facility will become a beacon of knowledge and opportunity for generations to come,” he stated.

Hannatu Gentles, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the TY Danjuma Foundation, commended the construction partners for their dedication and timely delivery of the project. She addressed the community members, urging them to take full ownership of the facility. “We have built this for you. The infrastructure is now in your hands. We encourage every parent to see this as an opportunity to secure a quality education for their children. Protect it, utilise it, and let us work together to ensure its sustainability,” Hannatu Gentles urged.

A UNICEF report in May 2024, stating that there were 18.3 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, paints a rather distressing image, and investments like this are critical to bridging the gap.

The administrator of the academy, Melissa Camiola, said, “The TY Danjuma Academy is more than a school; it is a beacon of hope, a cradle of excellence, and a promise to our children that their dreams matter.” The school’s mission is to provide a world-class education that sparks intellectual curiosity, shapes character, and prepares students to lead and innovate in an ever-changing world.

The World Health Organization and the Teachers Registration Council, key Foundation partners, speaking at the inauguration, highlighted opportunities for collaboration to deepen the foreseen impact of this notable project and ensure longevity and sustainability.

The Takum school project is a cornerstone of the TY Danjuma Foundation’s broader mission to improve access to quality healthcare and education across Nigeria. Over the years, the Foundation’s strategic investments have made a tangible impact in critical areas, including maternal and child healthcare, the control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), and teacher capacity building.
