One of the TY Danjuma Foundation grantees, ProHealth International, recently conducted a free Medical Mission at the Apawa Health Centre, Lau LGA. As part of its project sustainability measures, ProHealth, during the Health Mission conducted training for forty-two (42) Community Health Workers from different health facilities in the LGA.

The objectives of the TYDF-funded health missions are to bring health care close to the rural communities; promote health awareness; and to diagnose and treat ailments. The activities conducted during the free medical mission in Lau LGA included: free Consultation, Surgery, Laboratory test, and Health Promo. Beneficiaries of the exercise included men, women and children from Lau and other LGAs (Yorro, Karim-Lamido, Jalingo and Zing) and also from the neighbouring state (Adamawa). Common ailments treated and surgeries performed included: hydrosil, hernia, fibroid and post-abortal sepsis.

A total of one thousand and eighty-three (1,083) persons were attended to during the mission. These included 25 surgical operations; 189 laboratory analysis; 279 prescriptions; 68 dental procedures; 12 for health promo; and over 510 medical consultations.

The Government of the state expressed their support for the programmes by providing the facility, office space for the exercise, and also being the independent observer during the mission.
